From Overwhelm to Impact
How Small Actions Spark Big Planetary Change
Hello everyone, and welcome to this week’s deep dive!
In last Friday’s “Ask Coach Marie” video, I tackled some profoundly resonant questions about our relationship with the planet – both the overwhelming anxiety many of us feel and our desire for sustainable, impactful action. As the founder of Padma Life Coaching, I offered my unique blend of life renewal coaching, astrology, and spiritual wisdom to guide us toward a more empowered and hopeful approach.
If you haven’t already, I invite you to watch the full video here:
My insights aim to remind us that while the challenges facing our planet are immense, so too is our collective and individual capacity for positive change. This article expands on my core messages from the video, offering further reflection and tangible steps for cultivating hope and resilience for both ourselves and our world.
The Weight of the World: Processing Eco-Anxiety
Ben from Portland, Oregon, articulated a feeling many of us share when he asked: “I’m overwhelmed by climate change news and the state of the world. I feel constant anxiety and helplessness, even paralyzing guilt that I’m not doing enough.”
My response to Ben was a powerful balm that I truly believe in: “You can only do so much, and what you are doing is enough because it is what you are capable of doing, and that has to be enough.”
This isn’t an invitation to complacency; it’s a heartfelt call to self-compassion. The paralyzing guilt and anxiety Ben described are counterproductive. As I often say, “everything is energy,” and if we’re constantly radiating anxiety, that’s precisely what will be mirrored back to us.
Astrological/Spiritual Roots: The Power of Intention and Visualization
In the video, I emphasized the importance of visualization and meditation, particularly from the perspective that what you desire “has already occurred.” This aligns with the Law of Attraction, which I explain “only works with what’s going on inside.”
From an astrological and spiritual perspective, this connects deeply with powerful planetary energies and universal principles. For instance:
Neptune, the planet of spirituality, dreams, and idealism, rules our capacity for deep visualization and connection to universal consciousness. When we allow ourselves to envision a healed planet, we tap into Neptune’s highest potential, bringing that vision closer to reality.
Jupiter, the planet of expansion, hope, and optimism, encourages us to believe in larger possibilities. By cultivating a hopeful inner state, we align with Jupiter’s abundant energy, which can manifest positive outcomes.
Journal for Soul Growth: Releasing the Burden
Here are some prompts for your “Journey to Know Thyself” related to releasing eco-anxiety:
Acknowledge and Release: Take a moment to sit with your feelings about the state of the world. What specific anxieties or guilt are surfacing for you? Write them down without judgment. Now, imagine gathering all these feelings into a cloud or a river and watching them gently drift away, consciously acknowledging that you are releasing the need to carry the entire burden alone.
Identify Your “Enough”: Reflect on what you are currently doing for the planet or in your daily life that contributes positively. This could be recycling, conserving water, educating yourself, supporting sustainable businesses, or simply cultivating a more conscious mindset. List these actions. How does it feel to acknowledge that these actions are enough for you right now?
Future Vision: Close your eyes and visualize the world as you want it to be. See a vibrant, healthy planet, people living in harmony, and sustainable practices thriving. Focus on the feelings this vision evokes – hope, peace, connection. Journal about this vision in as much detail as possible, writing as if it has already come to pass.
Cultivating Hope and Resilience for Our Planet: We Are Not Separate
Moving beyond individual anxiety, I then introduced our life renewal topic: “Cultivating hope and resilience for our planet.” My central message was, and always is: “We are a part of nature... We are custodians for this planet, and therefore we’re responsible for it.”
I believe it’s crucial to understand the interconnectedness of all things, emphasizing that “if you change yourself, if you heal your trauma, if you work through at least one issue, you’re going to help to heal the world.” This is because, as I teach, “we’re all connected. We’re truly all one.”
This idea of personal healing leading to global healing is a cornerstone of many spiritual traditions and my coaching philosophy. Our inner landscape directly influences the outer world, reflecting back the energy we put forth.
Expanding on the Fourth Kingdom and Interconnectedness
In the video, I mentioned the mineral, plant, animal, and human kingdoms, positioning humanity as custodians. This hierarchical understanding comes with a sacred responsibility of care.
From a historical perspective, many ancient cultures revered the Earth as a living entity – a Mother Goddess (Gaia, Pachamama, Demeter). Recognizing ourselves as part of this living system, rather than separate from or superior to it, fosters a sense of profound stewardship. This aligns with my work in connecting to the Great Goddess and understanding our place in the cosmic tapestry.
Think of the Indigenous wisdom that views decisions through the lens of their impact on the seventh generation. This long-term, interconnected thinking is precisely what I advocate in my work.
From All or Nothing to One Step at a Time: Sustainable Action
Lisa from New York expressed another common struggle: “I want to live a more environmentally conscious life, but I get caught up in the all or nothing trap. If I can’t be perfectly zero waste, why bother?”
My advice was simple, yet I believe it’s revolutionary for those feeling overwhelmed: “Start with one thing... You have to do something that you can sustain and that you can build a routine around.”
I offered practical examples like separating garbage, choosing bottles over cans, or using cloth grocery bags. The key, as I see it, is consistency and avoiding the “fall off the cliff” scenario that comes from trying to do too much too soon. “Every little bit counts,” I affirmed.
The Astrological Principle of Small Steps
This approach resonates with the practical, disciplined energy of planets like Saturn and Mars.
Saturn governs structure, discipline, and long-term commitment. By starting with one sustainable habit and consistently integrating it into your routine, you build a solid foundation (Saturn) that can be expanded upon. This is how lasting change is made.
Mars provides the initial drive and courage to start. By focusing that Martian energy on one manageable action, you ensure follow-through rather than dissipation into overwhelm.
The “all or nothing” trap often stems from a perfectionist tendency that can be self-sabotaging. Embracing progress over perfection is a vital step toward sustainable living and a healthier mindset – both for ourselves and for the planet.
Journal for Soul Growth: Actionable Intentions
Identify One Sustainable Habit: What is one small, manageable environmental habit you can realistically commit to this week? (e.g., using a reusable water bottle, unplugging unused electronics, reducing food waste). Write it down.
Plan Your “Invocation”: Before you engage in this habit, take a moment to set an intention, as I suggested in the video. For example, “I intend for this action to contribute to the health and well-being of our planet and all its inhabitants.”
Practice Your “Dedication”: After performing the habit, consciously dedicate the energy. “May the positive energy from this action expand exponentially for the betterment of all mankind/people.” How does this intentionality shift your feeling about the small act?
Observe Your Impact: Over the next week, simply notice how this one small action feels. Does it create a sense of empowerment? Does it feel sustainable? Journal about your observations without judgment.
Bringing It All Together: Your Role in a Shifting World
My overarching message is one of empowerment through self-awareness and conscious action. By managing our own energetic output, healing our inner traumas (as I share in “And The Lotus Opened”), and taking consistent, manageable steps, we contribute to a global shift. We are not just bystanders; we are active participants in co-creating the world we wish to see.
Remember John F. Kennedy’s powerful mantra, which I believe extends beyond national borders: “Ask not what your nation can do for you but what you can do for your nation... and for the world.” This call to active participation, coupled with self-care and intentionality, forms the blueprint for a hopeful and resilient future.
